Port Arthur. On the Gulf Coast of Texas. 90 miles east of Houston. Envisioned by Arthur E. Stilwell as:
- a resort
- a port City
- terminus of the railroad he would eventually build linking Port Arthur to Kansas City
After gaining control of the Stilwell interest in 1900, John W. "Bet-A-Million" Gates built a rice mill in Port Arthur. Spent $1.4 million to dredge the Port Arthur ship canal. Ceded it to the federal government for a dollar.
Congress seals the deal by designating Port Arthur as a port of entry. Pretty good thing because by 1914, the Port of Port Arthur ranked as the twelfth largest port in the US and the second largest refining port.
Fast forward. Today, Port Arthur is the home of major refineries and remains the terminus of the Kansas City Southern railroad.
1900 population, 1000. 2000 census, almost 60,000. Here's to a diversified economy.
Notables who have called Port Arthur home include internationally famous artist Robert Rauschenberg. Music great Janis Joplin. Former Dallas football coach Jimmy Johnson. UGK-The UnderGroundKings.

Take a drive... for the roadside vendors. Pecans. Blueberries. Pumpkins. Watermelons. Jams and jellies. Take a drive for the scenery...trees, horses, cattle, wildlife. Get out of the car. Who knows, you might become a birder!
Stop in at the old hardware stores with the 3rd and 4th generation owners continue to serve. Most native Texans. Friendly and polite.
